How To Create A Fake Wifi Network

As usual this is for informational purposes only and not for illegal use

This is a very short tutorial on how to use Websploit to create a fake AP.

To start, bring up a terminal window and type the command: Websploit

Now you need to enter a series of commands in this order:

use network/fakeap – This initates the fake ap setup

show options – This as seen below shows you the minimum commands to be set-up and also the current configuration.

set ESSID Free-Internet – This is were you set the name for your AP, I called mine "Free-Internet"

To start your fake AP use the command: run

If you see the "Create Fake Access Point Successful" you have finished ^__^

A point to note is when you are done using the AP, remember to hit enter as this will close down the script properly.

Once users connect to your AP you can browse to them and go on to run Metasploit attacks.

This is a nice short tutorial mainly because of how simple it is to set-up. It is possible that you may get errors during the set-up of the AP when you exec the run cmd, I had to install a DHCP server with the command: apt-get install dhcp3-server and then everything worked fine.

Gninja, on point again! Never knew about this as a possibility. Now, youve given me something new/different to read/think/explore about. Just so Im clear,(Wiki) In computer networking, a wireless access point (AP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi. So, this will allow me to connect wirelessly to a wired network, right? I dont mean to be a pest, but Im learning! Keep it coming!

@guuf — In a way yes. You have a wireless access point so anyone that connects to you is also giving you the opportunity to get into anything that they are already part of e.g a wired network. It would be more likely to be an individual hoping to get free internet access.

but wouldn't they disconnect once they see they can't access the internet?
or does it direct them to your own access point?

you can set it up so your sharing internet access but then your going more into the man in the middle attack ^__^

I'm not sure that I properly understand what it does…
What I understand is that this attack makes your computer pretending that it's the router.
Is that correct?

@d3adMaN Yes you effectively turn your laptop into a wireless router/Access point. "Not saying I've done this but"….imagine a target sitting in McDonalds and he turns on his Wi-Fi on his phone and see's two AP's saying McDonalds wireless. One would be the real one belonging to McDonalds and the other your fake AP. If your fake AP had internet sharing setup the target could connect and browse the internet thinking he's using McDonalds internet but in the background you could run further exploits.

Just remember this shouldn't be used for illegal purposes bla bla bla lol

Ok , don't worry I have no intention to do it illegaly, just learning :)

I really like the fact that we can put everything into VMware and test it out, although ive been having trouble trying to simulate wireless attacks in vmware.
